Finally!!!...
The legendery concert(s) Diana Ross did in Central Park back in 1983 will be shown on US TV in March for the first time since the original airdate. I have a bootleg DVD of this, but Shout Factory has confirmed that they intend to release the show on DVD later this year! It was a legendery concert for many reasons and such a shame that it was never released (not even on VHS back in the 80s). I cant wait - the quality in the advert below is fantastic!
On July 21, 1983, the legendary Diana Ross took the stage in New York's Central Park before an audience of over 800,000 adoring fans. Soon after the singer began, pouring rain and heavy wind threatened to put an end to the show, but Diana pushed on for much of the set, urging the drenched crowd to remain calm and stay with her. Eventually the torrential storm put an end to the performance, but not before Diana promised her fans she would return the next day. True to her word, Diana performed the entire concert again on July 22nd for the people of New York and, as planned, proceeds from the concert benefited the Diana Ross Playground, which was built three years later in Central Park. Initially broadcast live around the world, this renowned concert was never again shown on television, and has never been released on DVD until now.

Miss Ross will be at the Grammy Awards this Sunday. She will present an award (and she is of course getting a Lifetime Achivement Award this year as well - and not a moment too soon!). I will of course post everything about it right here after the weekend :)

This is such a long time coming. I was in Central Park that faithful Wednesday 21st July 1983! New York was a little wilder as this was Pre-Disney, rough and tumble days of the 80s. Diana would go on to give one of her strongest concerts musically. She sung at least one or two songs from each of her 70s studio solo albums through her current, at the time, "Ross '83" including "Pieces of Ice" and "Let's Go Up", from "Silk Electric" she did "Muscles" and "So Close", from her RCA debut, the title song "Why Do Fools", a sizzling version of "Mirror, Mirror", "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out" from "diana", "It's My House" and "All for One" from "The Boss", amongst others. The costumes by Issey Miyake were stunning. The make-up by LancĂ´me was gorgeous and durable. Though the audience was a little wild, it would be the largest multi-cultural group she had performed before to date. It has been celebrated by ABC and TVLand as one of television's greatest moments!
I can whole heartedly support ever word that Bokiluis stated in his post about the Diana Ross Central Park concert. I attended both evenings of the concert as well as watching it on broadcast TV later. This singularly unique performance by Diana Ross should be in every single Ross' fan DVD collection. Now with the advent of large screen home television sets in millions of home it will be a sheer joy to watch Miss
Ross in this Central Park venue.
To have actually seen this concert live in the park would have been amazing! I have always felt it is such a shame that this concert has never been commercially available (like most other Diana concerts), because she is such a wonderful live performer and a lot of people just dont know that because of the lack of DVDs that showcase her talents.
I cant wait of the release of this DVD. I think it will serve as a great reminder (like her Grammy win this weekend) of just how talented this woman really is!
I really cannot believe Miss Ross never won a Grammy before! Jx
I know - considering the sheer length of her career, not to mention success, it seems almost impossible. But she finally got a big one :)
