Sorry dearie, I have only just got around to listening to these. So let's get to it...
Oh dear. Goldfrapp return to their hippy phase again? - a lot of sweeping strings and breathy vocals; it will probably take a few more listens, but I can't help thinking I prefer them/her when the songs are boppy and immediate. The impossible-to-pronounce Postiljonen sits very well with the Goldfrapp one, for very similar reasons. Very dreamy, very breathy, but I can't say it captured my ear straight away.
Stromae has a bizarre video, but the song got on my nerves, so I had to switch it off, sorry. Johanna? - is this not a Cascada song? Sounds like it to me. Much, much better in the "dance strumpet" stakes is the Loboda one - who, on the strength of this alone, should be better known in the West. She's so much better than bloody GaGa.
I like the one by ESB feat Perry Blake; a lot - I'd be intrigued to hear the remixes... Capital Cities have a great song and a fantabulosa video! I actually like the Max Barsikh one, too - which is more than can be said for his last few singles.
What the fuck is that Madhouse Inc one all about? Bizarre, in a sort-of-catchy way. Speaking of WTF - French Maid is just basically "fucking" fab!
However, there can be only one winner - and the star of the show (of course) has to be the ever-wonderful Kazaky! Touch them? I don't mind if I do... And don't we wish every passport control was like that?
As always, I'm glad you found something to like Jon sweetie.
My favorite Goldfrapp albums are Felt Mountain and Supernature, so I obviously love both musical sides of the duo. The new single is certainly not immediate, but I quite like it. The Postiljonen song is right up my alley - dreamy and reminds me of the 80s. That's pretty much all I need from a song on a regular day ;)
I am already tired of the Stromae song and suspect that it was indeed that video that made me take notice. The Johanna song is of course nothing but tacky eurotrash but please don't compare anyone to that dreadful train wreck that is Cascada!
I am pleasantly surprised that you enjoy the new ones from Max and Loboda. They can do no wrong in my book. I adore the Capital Cities video, one of the best ones I have seen this year. Great song too.
Madhouse Inc and French Maid do add a little class to the lineup, don't they? And I will expect nothing less then the Kazaky boys themselves waiting for me at the passport control the next time I leave the country!
Aaaah, Perry Blake. I have been a massive fan of his for almost 15 years. I have all his albums (even a couple of signed ones) and find him a criminally neglected artist. Of course his music is usually very depressive and not commercial at all - but hey, if people like Leonard Cohen can make a career out exactly that, then why not my Perry. The new song is a big departure from his usual sound, but the voice is certainly there. Great stuff.
