At The Copa...

The latest in the fabulous series of Diana Ross/The Supremes re-issues has been made available as a pre-order on both Amazon US and UK!

"Live At The Copa" will be released as a 2CD expanded edition on May 29th! No tracklist yet, but I will post it as soon as it has been made available.

The Supremes at the Copa LP was originally issued by Motown on November 1, 1965; Motown also released the Supremes' Merry Christmas LP on the same date. At the Copa peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and at number six on the Billboard R&B Albums chart. It was the first live album ever released by the group, and the only one with the original lineup.
The performances included on the LP include several pop standards, four of the Supremes' number-one hit singles, and a medley of songs by late soul star Sam Cooke. The release of the album led Motown to shelve a studio-record album of pop covers, There's a Place for Us, which featured many of the same songs as Copa, with the same arrangements. That album was finally released in 2004 as an expanded limited edition (now out of print).

The original release of The Supremes at the Copa does not include the group's entire set: for example, "From This Moment On" was the opening number in their Copa set, not "Put on a Happy Face". When the tapes were brought back to Detroit following the Copa engagement, it was discovered the recording quality did not come up to Motown quality standards as the acoustics at the Copa were not congenial to recording. Berry Gordy had Ross re-record her vocals live in Motown's Hitsville U.S.A. studio, in a sense, doubling her vocals as she matches her performance nearly perfectly.
The original, full setlist is expected (but not yet confirmed) to be included for the first time on the re-issue.

Also out in May (on the 15th): the long awaited DVD debut of Diana's legendery Central Park concerts in 1983.

After these releases, Hip-O Select will release an expanded edition of Diana's 1977 fan favourite Baby It's Me. It should be out later this year!
