XSCAPE...

XSCAPE: New Album Coming May 13th

It was announced today that on May 13th Epic Records, in conjunction with the Estate of Michael Jackson, will release XSCAPE, an album of new music by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. XSCAPE is executive produced by Epic Records Chairman and CEO L.A. Reid. After mining by the Estate of Jackson’s archives, Reid was granted unlimited access to the treasures spanning four decades of material on which Jackson had completed his vocals. Reid then teamed up top producers to “contemporize” the songs while retaining Jackson’s essence and integrity, creating the best music you’ve never heard.

The list of producers include global hitmakers Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate and John McClain.

The new album will feature eight brand new recordings. A Deluxe Edition of XSCAPE will include a selection of the recordings in their original form.

The title of this album honors Michael’s album naming process. He always chose a song from the album to name his projects and, beginning with THRILLER, used only one word titles, each with an edgy quality to them. This is true of the new project.

John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson said, “Michael was always on the cutting edge and was constantly reaching out to new producers, looking for new sounds. He was always relevant and current. These tracks, in many ways, capture that spirit. We thank L.A. Reid for his vision.”

Full press release below and more news about Michael Jackson’s upcoming album will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Remixes...

Brand new remixes of "I Walk Alone" by Cher have just been released as a promo and can be found here. No info on if there will be a physical release of the remixes or if it is the next official single from Closer To The Truth. Three further remix packages of the song should be released soon (following the success of "Take It Like A Man", which peaked at #2 on the Billboard Dance Chart).

Timeless Diva...

Great news for Mylene Farmer fans.

A double DVD/BluRay, as well as a limited "Robot Edition" of Timless - Le Film will be released on 16/05/2014. The film was screened in more than one hundred cinemas across France, Belgium and Switzerland yesterday.

The tour supported the singer's ninth studio album, Monkey Me. The tour began on September 7, 2013 and ended on December 3, 2013. It played 39 shows in 5 countries. Over 535,000 people saw MylĂ©ne live on this tour. A live CD was released in December last year, charting at #2 in France. During its first week of release, the album sold over 70,000 copies (much more than her two previous live albums, even though they had charted at No. 1). I think it's safe to say that the Miss Farmer will have yet another hit on her hands with the film version.

What Next?...

Billboard is partnering with Twitter to launch its first ever real-time music charts.

The Billboard Twitter Real-Time Charts will roll out in the next several weeks, and provide up-to-date rankings of songs and artists' popularity based on social media conversations. Billboard will house the chart on its website and on its Twitter account through its new Twitter Amplify partnership, providing in-tweet chart data for social media users.

Trends will be ranked on a real-time basis and over extended periods of time to track longevity of top songs and artists' popularity.

Twitter's music boss Bob Moczydlowsky said in a statement: "Twitter is where the music of the moment is discovered and discussed - every day, new songs and new artists are breaking on the platform. We're partnering with Billboard to create a ground-breaking chart to track the conversation around music as it happens. This means when artists share songs and engage with their audience on Twitter, the buzz they create will now be visible to fans, other musicians and in real time."

The move continues Billboard's efforts to expand the ranking qualifications of its charts beyond radio airplay and sales.

Now, excuse me - I'm off to write 10.000 tweets about Debbie Gibson...

Happy Birthday Darling...

I can't believe it! My darling diva, Diana Ross, turns 70 years young today!

Miss Ross has been featured many times here before - a look at her discography can be found here, her work with The Supremes is featured here and selections of some gorgeous photos can be seen here and here.

This time around, here is a  look at some of the magazine covers from her 50 (!) years in show business:

"I don't judge people by their sexual orientation or the color of their skin, so I find it really hard to identify someone by saying that they're a gay person or a black person or a Jewish person."

"If I have someone who believes in me, I can move mountains."

"Criticism, even when you try to ignore it, can hurt. I have cried over many articles written about me, but I move on and I don't hold on to that ."

"Just because I have my standards they think I'm a bitch."

"You know, you do need mentors, but in the end, you really just need to believe in yourself."

Diana Ross was, is and will always remain the supreme diva!

Also:

Diana Ross - Complete Motown Albums CD box set is coming out in October. 23 CDs, card sleeves (gatefolds where applicable) in a clamshell box. No tracklist or cover art yet, but the box can already be pre-ordered here

23 discs? Well, Diana made 18 albums with The Supremes and 15 solo albums at Motown. If additional titles (Blue, soundtracks, live albums etc) are added to her solo albums, the number is 23. It will be interesting to see just what this box will include - I would guess it's going to look something like this:

Studio albums:
1970: Diana Ross
1970: Everything Is Everything
1971: Surrender
1973: Touch Me in the Morning
1973: Diana & Marvin
1973: Last Time I Saw Him
1976: Diana Ross
1977: Baby It's Me
1978: Ross
1979: The Boss
1980: Diana
1989: Workin' Overtime
1991: The Force Behind the Power
1995: Take Me Higher
1999: Every Day Is a New Day
2006: Blue

Live:
1974: Live at Caesar's Palace
1977: An Evening with Diana Ross
1993: Stolen Moments: The Lady Sings...Jazz and Blues

Soundtracks:
1971: Diana! (TV)
1972: Lady Sings The Blues

Compilations with new material:
1981: To Love Again
1994: Diana Extended: The Remixes

Of course I have all of them - but you can bet I'm going to want to add this box to my collection, no matter what's included...

And finally: a rare (and stunning) live recording of one of my favorite Diana songs, along with a British TV documentary.
