Today's SOTD (Song Of The Day) is a UK number 1 from David Bowie. Released in 1980, the song served as a comeback of sorts for Bowie, and had a big impact on Blitz scene in London - or was it the other way around? (Steve Strange of Visage is in the video, amongst others).
Anyways, the track is still well remembered and launched Bowies 80s career very nicely...
Mr Bowie was always ahead of the game! He heard about the burgeoning "Blitz Kids" scene circling around St Martins College, went to investigate the club, and immediately recruited Mr Strange and other regulars for his video - the two things (Bowie's comeback and the rise of the New Romantics) fed off eachother. When I first entered the scene in the early 80s, the earliest gatherings were actually called "Bowie/Roxy Nights", and my love of David Bowie began then and there... Jx
There have been some wonderful documentaries made about this scene - for example a wonderful BBC sprogram from 2001 called A Fine Romances. I have always found this to be a very fasinating era.
If you check the "Our Icons" section on my links list, you'll find an absolutely fabulous website called "Blitz Kids" that is a cornucopia of everything from that era - I can get lost on that site for hours! Jx
