It's always a little weird to hear again songs that you loved as a kid, but somehow completely forgot about. For me, that is exactly the case with this one.
"Major Tom (Völlig Losgelöst)" by German singer Peter Schilling was originally recorded in German,
and released in West Germany on January 3, 1983. It reached #1 in West Germany,
Austria and Switzerland.
The English version, called "Major Tom (Coming Home)" was released in the United
States in September 1983. It reached #1 in Canada, #2 in France #14 on the Billboard Hot
100 Singles chart and #4 in South Africa. It also reached number two on the US dance chart. In the UK it just missed out on the Top 40, peaking at #42.
I heard this song again a couple of weeks ago - probably for the first time in almost 30 years. I really liked this as a kid, and I still do. Here is the video for the English version, along with the original German one.
