Sales...

So, how is music selling these day? Well,  a lot less then it once did! However, the good news is that in most countries people still prefer to buy the actual CD's instead of some bloody mp3s!

The decline of music sales is astonishing though - mostly thanks to people that still think there is nothing wrong with just stealing the albums (amongst other things) they like online, without ever paying for it. I cant for the life of me understand how so many people see this as any different then actually going into the record stores and stealing all the cd's and dvd's they want. But anyways: Germany is now the third biggest music market in the world, while the UK slip down to number 4.

Of course these stats can't explain just why such a load of old rubbish does seem to sell, and quality music so often falls out of the equation. Jx

Very true! Although IMO it has an awful lot to do with the fact that mainstream radio has become so stale and programmed - there are so many good artist that never even get heard, not to mention the ones that used to be "hot" but are now considered has-beens, no matter how good their more recent output is. Such a shame!

It does mean that one has to work harder to find the good stuff - but hunting is always fun, and greatly rewarding :)

Now THAT is indeed a great hobby, as you and I both know - spending inordinate amounts of time listening to the newer stuff we put on our blogs... Jx

Exactly! When radio and TV fails, thank god for the internet!

I used to discover a lot of music on MTV. I havent watched it in more then a decade now, I am sure that my once beloved MTV is NOTHING like it once was (probably filled with reality crap and an hour a day devoted to "music" - by that I mean tramps like Rihanna, Katy Perry and Ke$ha!).

It is interesting that with so much good music coming out of the UK lately, the charts are filled with so much crap! I think it has a lot to do with the digital downloads. The kids download singles, older people buy the albums (for example, Hurts dont do well at all with their singles, but everytime they release one the album starts to sell again - and Hurts are a group that most likely appeal largely to people over 25)...

thank God you and J post new stuff...MTV is gone to me (all reality crap) and even the spin off channels like MTV2 are now full of shit shows. I totally stopped doing the download stuff...I buy everything now, unless its something I cannot get in my country. We must not loose physical cds!

MTV is unwatchable these days, Radio 1 (and even Gaydar Radio) are absolutely chock-a-block with shit "R'n'B", so it's no wonder what passes for "the charts" these days is so full of rubbish... Jx

I'm not sure I'd call it "stealing albums" when it's just someone sharing with another. It's no different than if you let a friend borrow a CD and they added it to their iTunes library. One CD got purchased for two people's (or more) benefit. Also, nobody's ragging on CD writers are still highly popular with PCs. Thus you can copy a disc as much as you want and give it out to your friends. The only difference here, and this is the big kick in the ass for media companies, is that instead of sharing like that with just people you know, you can share with whole multitudes of people online. In either scenario, album sales plummet, but one is a bit more frantic. I wholeheartedly support artists that I LOVE! Like I buy anything and everything of my favorite artist's work, but if it's a new artist that I come across, I'll download their album as a trial run. If I like them enough I'll buy it. If I *really* like them, I'll seek out everything they've done. Ultimately, this is what things are heading to, especially today when there's so much financial suffering in countries that aren't used to knowing much of that. I think in ten years time, it's going to get down to artists really only profiting on the live performance, and to me, perhaps that's how it should be. But there are always two sides to every story.
