The Choirgirl...

As a major music collector, I always enjoy looking at the discography of artists - especially the ones I collect myself. And so it has become a custom on this blog to look back at the careers of artists - especially when they are about to release some new work.

Tori Amos found mainstream success in in the early 90s and still sells well - especially in the US where her albums usually enter the top 10. IMO her work has been quite uneven though - her Little Eartquakes album remains to me one of the best albums ever released, and the next three albums that follwed were filled with excellent material. As the 90s ended though, her albums became uneven, usually way too long and filled with a lot of nonsense! Still, there were always some excellent songs to be found on each record that made it worthwhile. From her later albums I especially like Scarlet´s Walk, The Beekeeper and most of all the excellent, "return to form" christmas album Midwinter Graces.

Night of Hunters is the 12th studio album from Tori, released on September 20th (available as a CD/DVD deluxe edition like many of her previous albums). The album marks a significant return for her to the acoustic based sound she popularized in the early 1990s, boasting songs all for piano and strings and arranged into "a 21st century song cycle inspired by classical music themes spanning over 400 years". The album finds Tori breaking a decade-long collaboration with her studio and touring band mates to work with a variety of new musicians. It will be fun to hear, and hopefully it will a pleasant surprise like her last record.

Here are all the major releases from Tori Amos so far.

Maybe I'm terribly stuck in the 90s but my favourite Tori Amos album is always Under the Pink. It was the first album of her's that I ever bought and I fell head over heels in love with Tori after that! And you're right, her albums have been pretty uneven through the years, though definitely some seriously great songs in between there!
