SOTD...
The Song Of The Day is this little gem by Madonna's backing singer Donna DeLory.
Madonna wrote and produced the song along with Patrick Leonard, supposedly for inclusion on the Like A Prayer album. However, Madonna is said to have felt that the lyrics were much too personal and she shelved the song (it's about her divorce to Sean Penn, which had happened shortly before the release of Like A Prayer in 1989).
Madonna gave the track to Donna in 1992. Donna was releasing her first solo album and used the song as the first single to launch the album. However, it didn't do much on the charts and the album went largely unnoticed.
I like the album, but I LOVE "Just A Dream". And Madonna's backing vocals on the track only make it so much better! Don't let the video and the fast production fool you - in a typical Madonna fashion, under these layers are some excellent, bittersweet lyrics and a sense of melancholy that she does so well. It is a fantastic song and I really wish she had released her own version of it. Perhaps one day a demo with her vocals will leak - but until then, here is Donna's version:

Fantastic post! I didn't know about this...or it is gone from my memory. Sounds so much like the 'like a prayer' era. Great find! I wanna hear that demo, too :) xoxoMM
Glad you liked - I was obsessed with this song for months after it came out. Yes, it really does sound like it would have fitted well into the whole "Like A Prayer" era. Fingers crossed for an M demo sometime in the future...
