Nobody Knows Who I Am...

Time now for Part 3 of the career of Sandra (Click for Part 1 and Part 2).

1988 saw a Japanese promo release of "Sisters And Brothers", a song from her debut album. But there were more exiting things ahead...

Sandra released the first single from her third album in May 1988. The track was called "Heaven Can Wait" and hinted at a different musical direction for the singer. The song received good reviews and became yet another hit in Europe, peaking at #12 in Germany.

Sandra nearly died while filming the music video for the single. The helicopter filming the video went too close to her while she was standing at the edge of a cliff, nearly causing her to fall down. Thankfully she managed to grab a hold of a rock, otherwise this retrospective might have ended right here.

Instead, Sandra went on to release one of the best albums (and singles) of her career.

"Secret Land" was the second single from the upcoming album. Released in September 1988, it gave further hints of her musical direction. It was not nearly as poppy and upbeat as most of her previous singles, but showed off another side of her voice which she would continue to use for years to come.

The excellent music video (one of Sandra's favorites) reflected the song very well. It was filmed on an island in Farnce and the whole crew had to run off with their cameras as the tide started coming in.

The album, Into A Secret Land, followed on October 24th. It sold well in Europe and charted at #14 in Germany. I consider this to be one of her Top 3 albums so far. All the singles are fantastic, but there are also some really great album tracks - from the delicious driven pop songs like "Crazy Juliet" and "Celebrate Your Life" to the stunningly beautiful "Just Like Diamonds". This was the album that truly made me a fan for life - although there were a couple of albums ahead later on that would rival this one...

The third single from the album was a slightly remixed version of "We´ll Be Together". It was released in November 1988 and became yet another hit, peaking at#9 in Germany.

A compilation album entitled Everlasting Love was released in the US and the UK in December. It included ten of her previous singles.

"Around My Heart" (also slightly remixed) followed in April 1989, peaking at #11 in Germany.

Rounding out the album releases was the promo release of "La Vista De Luna" in Spain in May 1989.

With animal rights and nature conservation becoming very high on her personal agenda, Sandra took part in the project Artists United for Nature in 1989. The song "Yes We Can" featured Brian May, Jennifer Rush, Chaka Khan and other artists. Sandra would remain a very visible fighter for animal rights in the years to come.

With three big albums and almost 15 hit singles, Sandra ended the 1980s as one of the most popular female singers in Europe. But the 90s would bring an additional major success from an unexpected project.

To be continued...
