Tracks...

It's been a while since I posted a batch of new/recent tracks that I'm enjoying these days. As always, it is a mix of the fabulous, the tacky and everything in between. Enjoy!

PS: a shout out to the fabulous Jon over at Give 'em the old Razzle Dazzle, who drew my attention to some of the artists. Do check out his excellent blog!

Thanks for the shout-out, my dear! I love this game...

You already know that I like Austra, White Prism, Chvrches and Kyla la Grange (and that although I love Sophie, I find her new "introspective" phase just downright dull), so what of the rest?

Paloma Faith is lovely, and can genuinely sing - but, oh dear, if she wanted to create her own "Northern Soul" song, then why did she not use some decent backing singers to cover up her very white tonality? A load of "oh yeahs" just got on my tits I'm afraid.

Helene Fischer's song sounded very familiar (or should that be formulaic?); not sure where from - Eurovision, maybe? Familiarity also seems to be the forté of Messrs Chase & Status - their choon transported me immediately back to that fab early 90s house era, and that is a very good thing ideed! A summer anthem?

Oh dear. The Avicii song is every bit as horrible as their last one - unless it's Dolly, Country'n'Western just does not do it for me (remixed or otherwise). In a similar vein of how-to-put-my-teeth-on-edge-ness (twice!), I have never liked Bruce Springsteen; he does everything I despise about pompous American music, and then over-eggs it just a tad more - just as U2 became after going to the States. Damn "stadium rock".

Far more energetic are the lady lezzers Tegan and Sara, but as they've been around for years and this song is almost two years old now, one wonders what exactly happened to their promising career. I suppose they're wildly popular in Canada.

Messrs Garrix and Hardway (oo-er) are very cute, and I am sure in the right club their track would sound fab, but I dunno - it rather lacks something. Similarly, DVBBS & Borgeous - intriguing video, though... Speaking of videos - wtf was that Russian one? Song was nasty too.

Now for the good stuff. Miss Kookie! What can I say? A new Macarena/Whigfield/Lou Bega, just in time for our holiday in Spain! I need a Sangria... And it is so good to have a new slice of OTT Hi-NRG campery from the fab Lili and Susie - I suspect, just maybe, they might be gay icons :-)

But, best of the lot, in my opinion - Mayra Veronica is totally, utterly fantabulosa! Even the fact that she is Simon Cowell's latest prodigy on his Syco label doesn't phase me.

Wonderful - keep up the good work, sweetie!

I have only heard the Paloma song once so far, but I think it will really grow on me. As for Miss Bextor, I must admit I still haven't bought the album (the deluxe version has been out of stock on amazon), but I love "Young Blood" as well as the bits of other songs I have heard. I felt that her last album ("Make A Scene") was a big disappointment and I am very ready for a different kind of sound from her.

As for Avicii, I absolutely love his stuff! As much as I usually hate country, he brings much needed emotion to dance music - which I'm sure is why he is rumored to be working on the new Madonna album. And Springsteen - he is KING! As utterly American as his music is, he is a master with lyrics and as much as I don't like this kind of music Bruce always delivers. I know what you mean regarding U2 however - they truly became shit when they started their whole American image thing which was then shoved down peoples throats!

Miss Fischer is apparently the queen of schlager in Germany, although this song (a huge hit in her homeland) is the first one to draw my attention. It does sound very familiar, almost like a Melodifestivalen number.

The Russian song/video is a bit of a mindfuck isn't it - which is why I included it. The Tegan and Sara song only got my attention late last year, although I had know about it for ages. Sounds so irresistibly 80s. And even though I heard "Lies" months ago, for some reason I have really only gotten into it now.

Garrix has released a couple of songs that manage to sound a little different from the rest of the current dance music, although a whole lot of copycat tracks are coming out now (including the DVBBS & Borgeous one).

Obviously I screamed like a little girl at a New Kids On The Block concert in the late 80s when I found out that Lili & Susie were back ;) I do love them, you know. Miss Kookie is my latest guilty pleasure - I have everintention of bringing back the Charleston this year (complete with pearls and wacky headdresses) and I suspect she might provide some of the soundtrack for my revolution.

Ah, Miss Veronica. No surprise that you adore that one - so do I! There is also an excellent Dave Aude mix out there that has been very popular in the US clubs.

'Til next time!
