2012 will soon be over, and we will say goodbye to what I consider to be one of the worst music years in recent memory (at least when you look at the UK & US singles charts!). Thankfully there are always some treasures to be found, but I for one am hoping for a much more interesting music year in 2013.
D'ya know, I'm currently listening to "Gloria Estefan's Latin Beats" on Radio 2, and La Sonora Ponceña is making my hips move, and I wonder - where is all the good music these days?
Certainly Mr Baker has his charms, and the song is decent enough, but...
I adore Miss Brucken, but why the sub-Adele song? I had higher hopes for her. The Pet Shop Boys seem to reflect the general mood, as they once again tug on our fondness for their past glories - very "Introspective" c.1988!
Despite the fact I liked Father Tiger's song you posted in a recent round-up, this Xmas one is a bit lacking in something. And as hard as I bloody try to like Miss Farmer, I can't help thinking that Ysa Ferrer does this sort of thing sooooo much better, and without that bloody asthmatic breathiness in the vocals!
So it is Miss Lorine Zeineb Nora Talhaoui for me this time! Roll on 2013 and let's hope for a brighter musical adventure... Jx
Yes, this year's music sucks big time. Though I know u r a big Madonna fan, I still have to say that MDNA is boring. The only good song off this record is Masterpiece (I still don't understand why she doesn't release that as a single, esp. with all the free publicity at the Golden Globe). PSB's new CD sounds like a collection of B-sides from the 80s. "Memory of The Future" is the only decent song from it. Which brings me to my point: the new CD of Daybehavior (from Sweden) is excellent!! Imagine the joy I have when I come across such perfect cinematic electropop in this year of blandness. Some tracks for you:
Yes, 2012 is coming to an end. And if Dec 21 is really the end of time as rumoured, I just want to say thanks to you again for all the enjoyment I have from your current and previous blog (blogspot and myspace). Thanks for sharing all the gems you've found on the web, esp. from youtube. Merry X'mas!!
I'm glad to see that I am not the only one that finds 2012 very lacking in the music department!
I disagree of course regarding MDNA ;) It is however most certainly not an album for everyone - much like American Life was, MDNA is an album that only the die-hard fans and most critics seem to like. I do agree though that "Masterpiece" is the best song on it and I can´t either understand why on earth she didn't release it as a single after the Golden Globes. Everything seems to be going wrong with they way her releases are handled after she left Warner Bros...
"Leaving" from the new PSB album is in my opinion just as good as pretty much everything they have done before - but choosing "Winner" as the intro single was a biiiig mistake!
I quite like what I have heard from Daybehaviour, thanks for the tip! There is always some good music coming from Sweden, although even they have been dropping the ball this year...
Thank you for following my blog all this time - hopefully we will all get through December 21st and enter 2013, continuing to create the soundtracks of our lives.
"Gloria's Latin Beats" obviously sounds like heaven to me Jon! But you knew that already ;)
I agree about the track from Miss Brucken, it is not at all what I expected - I still like it though, so please keep the awful A-word out if it ;) I still haven't gotten around to order her album, but I fully expect it to be much more in the style of what we have come to expect from her (her take on "Kings Cross" by Pet Shop Boys is said to be rather excellent).
Skál? Oh honey, you can say that again - I cant wait to have a sip or two this weekend, celebrating the end of the last work week before x-mas! Have great time at the bash and the theatre!
I don't know why my name is not showing up in the comment section. Anyway, you can still refer me as "anonymous" :)
I'm glad you like those clips from Daybehavior. Order that CD from their website, and you can get a signed copy. It cost me about 16 euros (with shipping, I think) to get the CD, and I don't regret any cent of it.
Though we disagree on MDNA, I agree that American Life is one underrated album. Actually, I quite like it - American Life, Love Profusion, Hollywood are great songs. The album was a clever rehash of electro-acoustic arrangements from Music. And she raps for the first time. I still don't understand why it flopped so badly. I guess the political tone of the song kills it. (BTW, Best Friend is another song from MDNA that I don't mind listen to :P )
Anyway, have a wonderful X'mas!! And let's hope the world and the music world will be much better in 2013.

Anonymous - I'll check them out when I have a moment (it's a birthday bash tonight, and we're at the theatre tomorrow).
Maybe we will have some decent new music to steer us into the apocalypse...
Skál!!
