Kylie Minogue has split with longtime manager Terry
Blamey.
However, earlier British reports that the parting
meant Minogue was retiring from music have been dismissed.
Blamey, who has managed Minogue's career
since the release of "Locomotion" in 1987, officially ended his partnership with
the star on New Year's Eve. Sources say Minogue made the decision in
September, with the pair working together amicably until the end of the
celebrations of her 25th anniversary in music.
"Kylie has decided to pull back
slightly from the pressures of her career and devote more time to herself and
her acting career," Blamey said. "This is not to say she will be
retiring from music, just taking a bit of a break." Blamey will "pursue other exciting
business opportunities and spend more time with my family. As we reach this
fork in the road after a wonderful 25 years working together, we do so
amicably, wishing each other nothing but the very best for each other's
continued success."
Minogue renewed her love of acting with a
critically-acclaimed role in last year's indie flick Holy Motors. "I had no idea Holy Motors would do
this for me," Minogue told News Limited in October. "It's made me a
little bit hungry for more ..."
Minogue also had a small role in another
cult film, Jack and Diane, out now on DVD/Blu-ray in the US and has been linked
to British musical romcom Walking on Sunshine, which goes into production this
year.
While the news marks an end of an era - and
one of the longest-running and most successful partnerships in pop music - a
spokeswoman for Minogue said she is "definitely not retiring from
music."
Blamey received an an award for his
management skills in London in November - Minogue gave a speech with read in
part "You can only imagine how much we've been through together: The
highs, lows and plateaus, the good the bad and the ugly. But throughout it all
Terry's commitment, support and guidance has remained constant."
Minogue's spokeswoman also denied British
media reports the split was provoked by a falling out between Blamey and
Minogue's father Ron over the direction of the star's career.
Kylie is supposed to be releasing a new album this year, so the news about taking a break comes as a surprise. Kylie herself said on Twitter that she was not quitting music, but no further info was given. I am also surprised that she has ended her very successful partnership with Terry (if she wanted to get rid of someone, she should quit working with the insufferable William Baker!).
Time will tell what will happen, but I really hope she will release a new album this year!

As I said on Marky's blog "Shine On And On", I feel sorry for Mr Blamey... Jx
I wonder what happened - maybe Kylie really wants to take her career into a new direction. I think she should, she recently said in an interview something a long the lines of wanting to continue in pop music but with more depth.
"Aphrodite" was a very good album but it felt like she was at the end of the road with that sound. Don't even get me started on the dreadful "Timebomb" - but then she releases the excellent Abbey Road album.
If she does indeed release an "emopop" album next, I will be very happy! She is very good at the more mature sound and that is what I personally would most like to get from her next. But as long as she continues to make music, I'll be happy.
Lord alone knows what "emopop" is supposed to mean, or how and why it will be such a radical change for Kylie. She retained Mr Blamey when she left PWL and went to Deconstruction, and presumably he supported her through all the (unwarranted) backlash against her choice of musical style on "Impossible Princess" (or "Kylie Minogue" as it was renamed here after Diana's death). Kylie's changes in musical direction have been a constant part of her 25 year career. It is strange she chooses to part company with him after all this time... Jx
some education for you Jon! It is EmotoPop not emopop http://shineonandon.blogspot.com/2012/11/kylie-i-want-my-next-album-to-be.html
Oh and Mr. Blamey is the one who held back Kylie from touring the US all those years...(I have a ton of sources who confirm this)
now K is free to Shine On where SHE
wants! :) Peace & love & Kylie!
Apparently I just made up a new word too ;)
"I want my next album to be… emoto-pop. Has anyone ever called anything emoto-pop before?"
I don't think so. What does that mean exactly?
"Emotional pop! I want to be dance floor -- I want to do what I do, which is pop dance, but I think if it has that emotional thread through it then that will ring more true to me at this stage in my life. I'm not 18".
The US shows were a big financial loss for Kylie, so it is no wonder that Terry, being her manager and all, advised her from doing them. And I can imagine that she put quite a lot of her own money into the K25 projects, so maybe that was just too much for Terry (just speculations, of course!).
Britney Spears is apparently on the verge of signing a Vegas deal that her manager was against but she wanted to do. She now has a new management team and is wasting no time in making the deal happen. So who knows, maybe Terry and Kylie could not agree on the direction of her career at this point.
Madonna fired her manager, Caresse Henry, in 2004 without any public explanation. Caresse commited suicide in 2010 and only after her sister started doing interviews and blaming Madonna for her sisters death did the truth start to come out. Caresse had started to spend quite a lot of money that wasn't hers to fund a newly developed drug problem. Madonna found out, tried to get her to go to rehab and offered to pay for the whole thing. Caresse refused and soon Madonna was forced to let her go. Nobody knew about this at the time and in fact the details have never been made official by Madonna or her camp.
But no matter what the reason was for the split between Kylie and Terry, I just hope that Kylie will continue what she does best: releasing music and going on tours! The popworld would not be the same without the princess!
Mr Blamey doesn't look the sort to have developed a heroin addiction, but appearances could be deceptive... :-) Jx
PS Whatever the story, I look forward to seeing how Our Princess's career goes on from here!
