No Christmas countdown would be complete without the Wham classic "Last Christmas".
The song is of course one of the all-time classics and there would be no Christmas shopping without hearing this song blasting somewhere in the background.
Wham! had been a dominant force in the UK
Singles Chart in 1984 and news that they were planning a Christmas single meant
that a battle for the coveted Christmas #1 spot in the UK seemed set to be
between Wham! and the year's other big act, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, who had
achieved a third #1 in early December with "The Power of Love". The
Band Aid project however produced the #1 single "Do
They Know It's Christmas?", meaning that "Last Christmas" peaked at #2.
The single sold well over a million copies
and became the biggest selling single in UK chart history not to reach #1. In Germany, the song is the most successful
Christmas single of all time, having spent 104 weeks on the German Singles
Chart and attained a peak position of No. 4. It has since been re-released several times and continues to sell well all over the world every year.
The song has been covered many, many times - but my favorite is of course the campest one of them all - by Swedish disco defenders Alcazar (who will be competing in next years Melodifestivalen!).
Alcazar released their version in Germany back in 2009, complete with a fabulous video that has been featured on this blog before. But hey, here it is again!

Over here it's very cold with loads of snow - as it should be in December! We are going Christmas shopping this weekend and totally feeling very festive! We just might blast both versions of this classic over the weekend ;)
