I am a bit more "on the ball" with this selection. Hurrah! So let's see what you've got for us...
First - as always - the ones I cannot abide. That thing by Hozier is truly horrible (the video and the song). Nauseating, in fact. And I loathe Damien Rice and his nasal whiney claptrap - begone, you pseudo hippy!
So - the rest..?
Mr Billy Idol's becoming a bit of a joke now, and one that's past its best - sort of Willem Dafoe meets the kind of song that made the closing credits of a Molly Ringwald movie circa 1986... And I have long documented my feelings about Mr Leonard Cohen. No matter how good the song, I wish he wouldn't bother to put his Oscar the Grouch "vocals" anywhere near it. Give it to Dolly Parton, before it's too late!
I am convinced that Consuelo Costin is actually a man, but her song is a fairly good Euro-trance effort; and the (other) man in the video is gorgeous (needless to say). As for Mr Kravitz - I wonder what Antonio Vivaldi would have made of being used to introduce a Sort-of-Seal-sort-of-Bryan-Adams number, complete with soft-porn video? He'd probably love it, actually! Not bad.
I've always had time for Miss Stefani (the fact she headed up the wonderful No Doubt, for one; and the fact she married "gender-bender" Marilyn's cast-off boyf for another), and I had high hopes for the new single. However, a sub-Rihanna ditty is not what I expected. Shame.
Kendji Girac provides ample evidence why just about everything sounds better with a Latin rhythm - I am looking forward to our next jaunt to Spain in February even more, now! And, speaking of Infernal and "earworms", their latest (OK, they call themselves "Paw&Lina" these days, I know) is soooo "early 90s", it is irresistible...
I am, however, going to be really perverse in my choice of "top choon", methinks. Take That's new one is excellent (they are such professionals!), even as a threesome (oo-er, missus). And although - as you well know - I adore Kylie, and a Matt Pop mix like that is worth every round of applause I can give, even she is not "top dog" here.
No, that accolade goes to the sassy Miss Nora Ekberg and AronChupa (her DJ brother, apparently) with the mightily bizarre and totally infectious I'm An Albatraoz!! [The fact that the video was filmed in Oakland's utterly glorious Art Deco masterpiece The Paramount Theatre helped, of course.]
Thank you, darling, for all the hard work and effort you put into these blogs. It is appreciated. I suppose I had better kick myself up the proverbial arse and get to work on one of my own...
I can assure you that I did not expect many of these to appeal to you (Damien, Leonard and Hozier in particular), so no surprises there. Billy is, well, Billy and I for one am glad to have him back, although I do agree that he has became a bit of a joke in recent years - OK, decades really. The Lenny Kravitz track is a bit of a surprise, he has released decent tracks here and there but I have never really been a fan. "The Chamber" however seems like a cross between Duran Duran, Seal and Roxy Music and somehow it works. And the number from Miss/Mr Costin is a guilty pleasure, I must say!
I somewhat agree with you on the Gwen Stefani song - it could be much better but she manages to drag it from the Rihanna cutters and turn it into an enjoyable little ditty (now, there's a word I rarely use!).
I do like the Take That song, but watching the video is quite weird. I was thrilled when the got rid of Robbie, but Take That with just three members just looks wrong. My other half has always been a TT fan so we will be getting the album for sure. Oh and yes, that Albatraoz number is quite fun - I believe it has already topped some charts in Scandinavia!
I shall now wait with great antici-pation for your next selection :)
