The Dawn...

Last night Kate Bush made a triumphant return to the concert stage - for the first time in 35 years! The 3 hour long show was met with great reviews from both critics and fans.

Kate Bush: Before the Dawn review – a lithe grace and note-perfect vocals
Hammersmith Apollo, London
(from The Guardian)

For someone who's spent the vast majority of her career shunning the stage, she's a hugely engaging live performer
5 out of 5

Over the course of nearly three hours, Kate Bush's first gig for 35 years variously features dancers in lifejackets attacking the stage with axes and chainsaws; a giant machine that hovers above the auditorium, belching out dry ice and shining spotlights on the audience; giant paper aeroplanes; a surprisingly lengthy rumination on sausages, vast billowing sheets manipulated to represent waves, Bush's 16-year-old son Bertie - clad as a 19th-century artist – telling a wooden mannequin to "piss off" and the singer herself being borne through the audience by dancers clad in costumes based on fish skeletons.

The concert-goer who desires a stripped down rock and roll experience, devoid of theatrical folderol, is thus advised that Before the Dawn is probably not the show for them, but it is perhaps worth noting that even before Bush takes the stage with her dancers and props, a curious sense of unreality hangs over the crowd. It's an atmosphere noticeably different than at any other concert, but then again, this is a gig unlike any other, and not merely because the very idea of Bush returning to live performance was pretty unimaginable 12 months ago.

There have been a lot of improbable returns to the stage by mythic artists over the last few years, from Led Zeppelin to Leonard Cohen, but at least the crowd who bought tickets to see them knew roughly what songs to expect. Tonight, almost uniquely in rock history, the vast majority of the audience has virtually no idea what's going to happen before it does.

The solitary information that has leaked out from rehearsals is that Bush will perform The Ninth Wave, her 1985 song cycle about a woman drowning at sea – which indeed she does, replete with staging of a complexity that hasn't been seen during a rock gig since Pink Floyd's heyday – and that she isn't terribly keen on people filming the show on their phones.

The rest is pure speculation, of varying degrees of madness. A rumour suggests that puppets will be involved, hence the aforementioned mannequin, manipulated by a man in black and regularly hugged by Bush during her performance of another song cycle, A Sky of Honey, from 2005's Aerial.

The satirical website the Daily Mash claimed that, at the gig's conclusion, Bush would "lead the audience out of the venue, along the fairy-tale Hammersmith Flyover and finally to a mountain where they would be sealed inside, listening to Hounds of Love for all eternity".

In fairness, this was no more demented than the thoughts of the august broadsheet rock hack, apparently filing his report direct from the 1870s, who predicted that Bush would not take part in any choreographed routines because dancing in public is "unbecoming for a woman of a certain age".

As it turns out, the august broadsheet rock hack could not have been more wrong: for huge sections of the performance, Bush's movements look heavily choreographed: she moves with a lithe grace, clearly still drawing on the mime training she underwent as a teenager forty years on. Her voice too is in remarkable condition: she's note-perfect throughout.

Backed by a band of musicians capable of navigating the endless twists and turns of her songwriting – from funk to folk to pastoral prog rock - the performances of Running Up That Hill and King of the Mountain sound almost identical to their recorded versions - but letting rip during a version of Top of the City, she sounds flatly incredible.

You suspect that even if she hadn't, the audience would have lapped it up. Audibly delighted to be in the same room as her, they spend the first part of the show clapping everything she does: no gesture is too insignificant to warrant a round of applause. It would be cloying, but for the fact that Bush genuinely gives them something to cheer about.

For someone who's spent the vast majority of her career shunning the stage, she's a hugely engaging live performer, confident enough to shun the hits that made her famous in the first place: she plays nothing from her first four albums.

The staging might look excessive on paper, but onstage it works to astonishing effect, bolstering rather than overwhelming the emotional impact of the songs. The Ninth Wave is disturbing, funny and so immersive that the crowd temporarily forget to applaud everything Bush does. As each scene bleeds into another, they seem genuinely rapt: at the show's interval, people look a little stunned. A Sky of Honey is less obviously dramatic – nothing much happens over the course of its nine tracks – but the live performance underlines how beautiful the actual music is.

Already widely acclaimed as the most influential and respected British female artist of the past 40 years, shrouded in the kind of endlessly intriguing mystique that is almost impossible to conjure in an internet age, Bush theoretically had a lot to lose by returning to the stage. Clearly, given how tightly she has controlled her own career since the early 80s, she would only have bothered because she felt she had something spectacular to offer. She was right: Before The Dawn is another remarkable achievement.

I really hope we will see a DVD/Blu-Ray recording of this! In the meantime, enjoy this new BBC documentary on Miss Bush.

Before The Dawn...

Kate Bush spent three days submerged in a flotation tank for a daring film stunt to be shown during her sensational stage comeback after 35 years.

The 55-year-old singer drafted in six diving instructors to help make the wacky footage which will be shown during her 22 night residency at London’s Hammersmith Apollo in August.

Reclusive Kate - who last toured in 1979 and previously admitted that walking on stage made her “incredibly nervous” - has employed more than 100 people to work on the upcoming sold-out shows.

Earlier this month she hired out an underwater stage at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire where she spent three days floating in water. She was preparing a segment of the show which sees her drifting in the sea to be later rescued by a helicopter.

An insider said: “During her concerts there will be lots of footage and special effects. Kate wants the show to be out of this world and hired the underwater stage which is fitted with a wave machine and special lighting at Pinewood Studios. She spent three days in the tank re-shooting scenes and performing her songs. She wanted to create the effect of her floating in the ocean, lost at sea. The footage ends with her singing Hello Earth and being saved by a helicopter. Special technicians re-created the helicopter by using ceiling fans.”

The secret recording was code named Navy Blue. And Kate performed some of her most iconic songs including And Dream of Sheep, Wake Up, Hello Earth and Jig of Life.

Despite being submerged in water, production crew were gobsmacked at how incredible Kate’s voice sounded during filming.

One said: “We were all brought to a complete standstill as she sang, her voice is absolutely incredible, it was completely flawless. It was the most beautiful thing some of us had ever heard. She may have aged but her voice hasn’t changed.”

When Brit Award winning Kate announced her Before The Dawn tour in March she released a poster of her wearing a life jacket in the sea. Despite being criticised for releasing it at the same time as the disappearance of Flight MH370, she revealed that her inspiration came from her own conceptual piece called The Ninth Wave which is formed of seven songs.

She said: “The image that was chosen to advertise the shows originates from a conceptual piece called The Ninth Wave that was released in 1985. It is about a woman who is lost at sea but is rescued in the end. Months ago I thought that, as part of the show centres around this musical piece, it would hopefully make a dramatic shot.’

In March, Kate’s tour sold out in just 15 minutes. One source said: “Kate knows her shows are the most highly anticipated for years, it’s a lot of pressure but she has thrown everything into it. Millions of pounds are being spent on special effects, and her costumes and staging. It’s going to be incredible.”

Since Kate’s last tour in 1979, she has given the occasional live performance including a 1982 benefit concert in aid of The Prince’s Trust. In 2002, she appeared with her friend David Gilmour, singing the part of the doctor in Comfortably Numb at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Since she released her first single Wuthering Heights in 1978, she has produced 10 albums of which three have topped the album charts. In 2013 Kate - who is married to guitarist Dan McIntosh and has a son Albert - was awarded a CBE for her contribution to music.

Then & Now...

Following the very unexpected news that Kate Bush is doing her first live shows in 35 years in London later this year, fans have been sent into a frenzy. A pre-sale for fans registered to her mailing list begins on Wednesday and general sale starts in Friday. I think it's safe to say that demand will be overwhelming.

To celebrate Kate's long overdue return to the stage, here is her 1979 show from Hammersmith, a documentary about the tour and her TV special from the same year. Enjoy.

Capacity:

It's gonna be very difficult to get tickets, based on the likely demand. A fan has already contacted the venues and ticket websites. Photo ID is required and the purchaser can't just accompany the person to the venue and leave - they have to be attending the show. So tickets bought on sites like eBay will be invalid. Hopefully this will keep the bloody scalpers away (although I doubt it)...

For those lucky enough to be on Kate's official mailing list:

We are contacting you as you are eligible to participate in the fan pre-sale for the "Before the Dawn" concerts in August & September 2014 at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith 48 hours ahead of the general ticket sale on 28th March 2014.

Please visit www.eventim.co.uk at 9.30am on 26th March 2014, locate the show you’d like to attend, select the fan pre-sale from the drop-down menu and enter the unique access code below for your chance to purchase tickets to one of the shows:

**THE ACCESS CODE WILL BE INVALID IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED THIS EMAIL DIRECTLY FROM KATEBUSH.COM**

**ALL NEW SIGNEES TO THE KATEBUSH.COM MAILING LIST FROM 00:00AM ON 1ST MARCH 2014 WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR PRE-SALE TICKETS**

This event is for fans only and the following rules are in place to ensure that tickets do not get sold on and fans do not pay a higher price for their tickets.
Ticket purchases are limited to a maximum of 4 per order. For example, you can try to purchase up to 4 tickets for just 1 of the 15 concerts, or 1 ticket for 4 separate shows. All tickets MUST be purchased in the same transaction in order for the access code to remain valid.
The name of the lead booker will be printed on each ticket. The name cannot be changed once the booking has been made.

The lead booker will be asked to present ID to gain entry into the venue. Failure to adhere to the terms and conditions may result in the customer's order being void. There are no exceptions to this rule.

If you are booking more than one ticket your guests must arrive at the concert at the same time as you. Failure to do so will result in the guests being turned away.
Tickets cannot be resold or transferred under any circumstances. If the promoter reasonably believes this to be the case the barcode on the ticket will be voided, prohibiting entry to the concert.

Age Restriction: 14+ (ALL UNDER 16's MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT)

As the number of tickets reserved is limited they will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Sadly this means that not everyone receiving this offer has a guarantee of securing a ticket during the pre-sale, but anyone who doesn’t manage to get one will still be able to try again when general tickets go on sale at 9.30am 28th March 2014.

A Revisited Story?...

Rumor has it that Kate Bush is releasing a compilation CD/DVD later this year.

Nothing has been officially announced yet, but it is known that Kate shot a video with Jude Law in London recently, which is said to be for a 2012 version of "Running Up That Hill". EMI are involved and the package is said to be called Revisiting The Whole Story, featuring 22 tracks and 35 videos.

File:Kate Bush The Whole Story.jpg

Now, time will tell if there is any truth in these rumors, but I think Kate is extremely overdue in releasing a compilation CD/DVD. The only one she has ever released was The Whole Story back in 1986 #1 in the UK). A VHS/LD was also released with her videos at the same time. After the dreadful Director's Cut I just hope she will NOT touch the songs from their original recordings!

Review...

Q Magazine has just published a short, 4 star  review for the upcoming Kate Bush album. They say it sounds a bit like the rather awful Director's Cut. Thankfully though they mention that is sounds the most like the only good thing on that album: "Moments Of Pleasure". The review mentiones that the only mistep is the title track (which features Stephen Fry). The album is released on November 21st.

More Snow...

Hi there,

I just wanted to say how excited I am about the response to the announcement of '50 Words For Snow'. Thanks so much. I am really pleased with how it's all come together and I hope you enjoy the music and the artwork when it's released.

With best wishes,
Kate

Kate's 10th studio album "50 Words For Snow" will be released on 21 November 2011. It will feature the following musical guests:

  • Andy Fairweather Low appears on Wild Man
  • Elton John appears on Snowed In At Wheeler Street
  • Stephen Fry appears on the song sharing the same name as the album, 50 Words For Snow.
Elton John? Really? Hope he shuts up and just plays the piano (although I find it hard to believe that man could shut up for even a second).

The first single from the album will be “Wild Man”.  The new single will be released digitally world-wide on Tuesday 11th October at midnight. (GRRRRRRRRRR - really? I would imagine most Kate Bush fans wanting an ACTUAL release of this).

On Monday 10th October Ken Bruce will be broadcasting the worldwide exclusive of "Wild Man".  A radio edit of Kate's new single will be played on BBC Radio 2 (88-91FM) during Ken's show just after 11am UK time.

November?...

Kate Bush could release a band new album in November, according to Mark Poston of EMI Australia.
"Of course, you can never be sure with Kate Bush. She does things at her own pace. But we've been told to prepare for a November release," Poston told the Star Observer.

Kate mentioned in an interview læast May that she had written most of the album and already recorded some material.

Her latest "album",  Director's Cut, reached number two on the UK album chart this spring.

Tracks...

You know the drill - here are some of my favourite recent tracks. Good too see the likes of Kate Bush, Amanda Lear, Stevie Nicks and Martha Wash (and even Grace Jones) still here in 2011! Roisin Murphy NEEDS to make a new album, I officially love Clare Maguire and Cocknbullkid - Lady Gaga on the other hand seems to be going downhill very fast. While I do like parts of her new single, it is still a far cry from her pre- "Born This Way" work. And the less said about the "Judas" video, the better...

Sensual Shoes...

Kate Bush has announced the full tracklisting  for the "Director's Cut" album.

As previously announced, the record features reworkings of songs from 1989's "The Sensual World" and 1993's "The Red Shoes".

"Director's Cut" is released on May 16 through Fish People, with distribution via EMI. The opening track, 'Flower Of The Mountain', is a new version of the title track from "The Sensual World".

Bush explained: "Originally when I wrote the song 'The Sensual World' I had used text from the end of 'Ulysses' by James Joyce, put to a piece of music I had written. When I asked for permission to use the text I was refused, which was disappointing.

"I then wrote my own lyrics for the song although I felt that the original idea had been more interesting. Well, I'm not James Joyce, am I?

"When I came to work on this project I thought I would ask for permission again and this time they said yes. It is now re-titled 'Flower of the Mountain' and I am delighted that I have had the chance to fulfill the original concept."

All lead vocals and drums on the album have been newly-recorded, and three tracks - including 'This Woman's Work' - have been completely re-recorded. Guests on the album include Steve Gadd, Danny Thompson and Mica Paris.

A short film directed by Bush to accompany lead single 'Deeper Understanding' will feature Robbie Coltrane, Frances Barber, Noel Fielding and Kate's son Albert, who sings as the computer programme on the reworked version.

The full tracklisting of "Director's Cut":

1. 'Flower Of The Mountain' (originally 'This Sensual World')
2. 'The Song of Solomon'
3. 'Deeper Understanding'
4. 'Lily'
5. 'The Red Shoes'
6. 'This Woman's Work'
7. 'Moments of Pleasure'
8. 'Never be Mine'
9. 'Top of the City'
10. 'And So is Love'
11. 'Rubberband Girl'

(I am very glad to see that one of my all-time Kate faves is included on the album: "Moments Of Pleasure").

Kate The Director...

Kate Bush,Director's Cut,UK,TRIPLE CD,533082
Kate Bush releases an unusual new album “Director’s Cut” on May 16 on her own label Fish People, in conjunction with EMI.

On “Directors Cut” Kate revisits a selection of tracks from her albums “The Sensual World” and “The Red Shoes”, a process that presents a fascinating portrait of an artist in a constant state of evolution. She has re-recorded some elements whilst keeping the best musical performances of each song – making it something of a director’s cut but in sound, not vision.

A new version of “Deeper Understanding” will be released as a single in April. Although written some twenty years ago, the song may be more relevant today than ever…

Kate is currently working on new material although no release date has been set for this.

“Director’s Cut” will be released in the following formats:

Digital Album, Standard CD in a case-bound book, Deluxe CD (three disc package, including Director’s Cut, The Sensual Word and re-mastered The Red Shoes) in a case-bound book and two-disc vinyl.

Other digital and vinyl formats will be made available on katebush.com. Details will be published shortly.
